Winter Brothers Book Cover This literary tapestry of two distinctive voices began with the author's discovery of a trove of unpublished diaries by James Gilchrist Swan, one of the first white settlers of the Puget Sound region and the Pacific Northwest coast. Swan's voluminous diary pages, from 1862 to l898, are a source of vivid detail from an unconventional life lived in the rough port towns and outposts among the seagoing Makah and Haida tribes.

Ivan Doig has woven excerpts from Swan's diaries with his own rich journal of commentary as he traveled in Swan's footsteps to the islands, coves, and capes of the once-wild coastline over the course of one memorable winter.
